Lunch: during the i-week students eat on campus for a maximum of € 15/lunch.

INTERNATIONAL WEEK

CHALLENGES FOR BUSINESS - COURSE CODE 1305TEWBDK

1. OBJECTIVE

The mission of the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Antwerp, includes a strong international orientation of our educational and research activities. The “International Week: Challenges for Business” (“I-Week”) was set up to offer insights on the theme of sustainability (Corporate Social Responsibility) in an international context (speakers, students, topics). Next year, the International Week will be held from Monday 08 March till Friday 12 March 2021.

With the theme of sustainability, we aim to expose our students to international views and perspectives on corporate sustainability, social and environmental accounting, and business strategy for sustainability. It is a great opportunity for students to acquire a global perspective and intercultural skills in a course specific context. Students will participate in interactive lectures delivered by international visiting professors and business managers with international experience. Students are also able to see first-hand how various companies handle sustainability by visiting these companies. This new component of the I-Week was introduced in 2020 and will be continued due to great success. International students will have the opportunity to closely work in groups with Belgian students. For an optimal learning experience, students should be very fluent in English.

2. LEARNING GOALS

Students are able to

i. relate the overarching theme of the international week to the knowledge acquired in the different areas of business administration and business economics

ii. view the overarching theme and these areas from an international perspective

iii. apply gained knowledge in an international team

iv. produce a well-structured written report and/or share the results of group work through a clear presentation in English, showing the capacity to synthesize

v. make an ethical reflection on the theme of the international week. Through their participation in I-Week, students will also gain a better understanding of the possibilities to further internationalize their curriculum.

3. EVALUATION OF LEARNING

Credits and workload: 3 ECTS requires a workload of about +/- 80 hours1 (incl. lectures, study, group work, etc.). More than half of this workload will be put in the week of 08 – 12 March. Students are expected to be present in all presentations/workshops.

Students will be evaluated as follows:

· Poster (20%) on a particular topic, within their allocated teams, to be evaluated at the end of I-Week.

· Test (30%) after the I-week on Wednesday, March 17 from 2:00 to 4:00pm CET.

· Written group paper and reflection (50%). Students choose from a list of topics and submit their group paper three weeks after the I-week (deadline: April xx, 1pm). This group paper also requires (online) meetings after I-week.

· Peer assessment (to be filled in by every student individually) This final component can affect the group paper grade.

4. PROGRAMME

During the International Week, you will interact with speakers from various organizations talking about CSR, ethical accounting, environmental impact, supply chain sustainability and other aspects of sustainability in an international business world.

On the first day, speakers with an academic background will introduce you to the topic. On the next three days company speakers will share their experiences in plenary sessions and on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon smaller workshop sessions are organized by academic as well as company speakers. In 2020, companies like Lidl, WWF and Climate Response also shared their stories with the students. Moreover, the students were able to visit the Port of Antwerp, Metallo, Deme and Aertssen Group as part of their i-week experience. On the final day of the 2020 I-Week, Sylvia Lenaerts, Vice Rector Valorisation and Development at the University of Antwerp, was scheduled to give the opening speech. After this, a closing debate was organised with Marie Delvaulx from the Shift, Piet Colruyt from Impact Capital and Pri Notowidigdo.

The specific programme for 2021 will be made available mid-February.
